What you’ll actually pay in cash
Your dive is booked and charged in euro on Diving Scanner. These are the things that aren’t.
Marine park & port fees
Charged locally, in local currency, and almost never included in the price of the dive. Egypt, Indonesia and the Maldives all levy them per day or per park.
Crew tips
Cash, at the end of the trip, and the customary amount varies enormously by country. Working it out on the boat is how people over- or under-tip by 5×.
Transfers you arrange yourself
A taxi from the airport to the harbour is the first price you're quoted in a currency you don't think in. This is the tool for that moment.
Kit hire & extras on the day
A torch, a reef hook, an extra tank, a replacement mask strap. Small numbers that are easy to misjudge by a factor of ten.
Three things worth knowing before you change money
The rate here is the mid-market rate — nobody sells you that
It’s the midpoint between what buyers and sellers are paying, and it’s the number news sites quote. A bank, card or bureau de change adds a margin on top, typically anywhere from under 1% for a good travel card to 10% or more at an airport counter. Use this page to know when a quote is unreasonable, not to predict your statement to the cent.
Always decline “pay in your own currency”
When a card machine or a cash point offers to charge you in euro instead of the local currency, that’s dynamic currency conversion, and the machine’s operator picks the rate. It is essentially always worse than letting your own bank convert. Choose the local currency.
Rates here refresh daily, not by the second
Our source publishes once a day, and the widget prints the timestamp it was last updated. For a taxi fare or a tip that is more than accurate enough. For anything where a fraction of a percent matters, check with your bank.
